10 Fast and Free PC Security Enhancements

Posted by Rahil Tuesday, March 15, 2011 2 comments

Before you spend a Time on security, there are many precautions you can take that will protect you against the most common threats.

1. Check Windows Update and Office Update regularly http://office.microsoft.com/productupdates; have your Office CD ready. Windows Me, 2000, and XP users can configure automatic updates. Click on the Automatic Updates tab in the System control panel and choose the appropriate options.

2. Install a personal firewall. Both SyGate http://www.sygate.com/ and ZoneAlarm http://www.zonelabs.com/ offer free versions.

3. Install a free spyware blocker. Our Editors' Choice ("Spyware," April 22) was SpyBot Search & Destroy http://security.kolla.de/. SpyBot is also paranoid and ruthless in hunting out tracking cookies.

4. Block pop-up spam messages in Windows NT, 2000, or XP by disabling the Windows Messenger service (this is unrelated to the instant messaging program). Open Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Services and you'll see Messenger. Right-click and go to Properties. Set Start-up Type to Disabled and press the Stop button. Bye-bye, spam pop-ups! Any good firewall will also stop them.

5. Use strong passwords and change them periodically. Passwords should have at least seven characters; use letters and numbers and have at least one symbol. A decent example would be f8izKro@l. This will make it much harder for anyone to gain access to your accounts.

6. If you're using Outlook or Outlook Express, use the current version or one with the Outlook Security Update installed. The update and current versions patch numerous vulnerabilities.

7. Buy antivirus software and keep it up to date. If you're not willing to pay, try Grisoft AVG Free Edition (Grisoft Inc., w*w.grisoft.com). And doublecheck your AV with the free, online-only scanners available at www.pandasoftware.com/activescan and http://housecall.trendmicro.com/.

8. If you have a wireless network, turn on the security features: Use MAC filtering, turn off SSID broadcast, and even use WEP with the biggest key you can get. For more, check out our wireless section or see the expanded coverage in Your Unwired World in our next issue.

9. Join a respectable e-mail security list, such as the one found at our own Security Supersite at http://security.ziffdavis.com/, so that you learn about emerging threats quickly and can take proper precautions.

10. Be skeptical of things on the Internet. Don't assume that e-mail "From:" a particular person is actually from that person until you have further reason to believe it's that person. Don't assume that an attachment is what it says it is. Don't give out your password to anyone, even if that person claims to be from "support."

Fool keylogger and protect yourself from hackers

Posted by Rahil Wednesday, February 2, 2011 0 comments

when you surf net at public computers or net cafes…maybe it can be even at your friends house..etc.. there is a danger that a possible key logger software can steal your password, so i have come up with a simple and effective way to counter it…at least 50% …

lets see how simply you can fool a key logger,

When you choose passwords try using simple, capital & numbers as a combination..

when you enter them in a public computer rather than entering it in sequence try entering it in a combination

for this trick suppose my password is - hi2K1987 [DEMO password]

Now when you break your password into 3 combinations and enter them one after another (without using the backspace key) so what i did was i entered 2k first then using the mouse i went to the start of the password field and entered hi then i placed the cursor at the end and entered 1987 now simply the key logger is fooled.

he will read mah password as: delghi2k1987(fooled)

Speed up your internet by 20%More

   Microsoft reserves 20% of your available bandwidth for their own purposes like Windows Updates and interrogating your PC etc

You can get it back:

Click Start then Run and type "gpedit.msc" without quotes. This opens the group policy editor.

Then go to:
--> Local Computer Policy
--> Computer Configuration
--> Administrative Templates
--> Network
--> QOS Packet Scheduler
--> Limit Reservable Bandwidth.

Double click on Limit Reservable bandwidth.
 It will say it is not configured, but the truth is under the 'Explain' tab i.e." By default, the Packet Scheduler limits the system to 20 percent of the bandwidth of a connection, but you can use this setting to override the default."
So the trick is to ENABLE reservable bandwidth, then set it to ZERO. This will allow the system to reserve nothing, rather than the default 20%.It works on Win 2000 as well.

Sometimes its always healthy to shutdown your PC if you are not using it. I mean, suppose you are downloading a file that will be completed at an estimated time of say 1 hour. You can avoid sitting in front of the monitor till the download is complete. just use the below freeware software to shutdown the computer automatically after a specific amount of time.

AutoShutdown forWindows software (freeware)- automatic shutdown

 Usage of Auto Shutdown:
1. Set the time.
2. Set the action to be taken.
a.    Shutdown means that the computer will be turned off (after logging off, if needed). Force means that the running applications (if any) will be forced to close themselves). This can be dangerous, is some cases you may loose your data, unsaved documents.
b.    Remind me about means that, when the time will come, a message box will be shown with your message (e.g. “Eggs are ready!”, or “the movie has began!”).
3. If you want, minimize the program (the “Auto Shutdown” program dialog).
4. That’s it. When the time will come, auto shutdown will do the specified job.
Of course, if you close the dialog (the “Auto Shutdown” program), then nothing will happen. Auto Shutdown must be running to work.

Hibernate is very cool feature.In windows environment, the hibernation is a built-in feature used to increases your work performance and also minimizes the windows startup time. For example, if you have to keep open a lot of files and windows applications then you can leave you system in hibernate mode without closing the open programs. When you restart computer after hibernation, all the running files and applications will be restore as you have left them. Windows store the all hibernated information in the Hiberfil.sys file using system root folder. The size of this file is roughly equal to the RAM of your system.
Follow the given steps to activate the hibernation in windows XP:
1.To use this feature, you will need to be logged into your computer with administrative rights.

2.First click on Start button> Control Panel, click on Performance and Maintenance then click on Power Options.
3.A new “Power Options Properties” dialog box will appear
4.Select Hibernate tab and then select the “Enable hibernation” check box to enable the hibernate feature.
If you system does not support the hibernation feature then the hibernation tab will not available .Click on Apply button to  the changes then click on Ok button to end the configuration process. After enabling the hibernation feature click on Start button then click on “Turn off Computer”. In the “Turn off Computer” dialog box, press the “Shift” for some time and click on Hibernate button. Your system will take some time to complete the hibernation process.

Once it happened to a friend of mine, when his newly bought laptop was infected with this autorun.inf virus. This virus corrupted almost all the  drives on the Hard disk, and when ever he tried to double click on the drive or opening  any drive it opened in a new window. In some cases, when your drive is infected with this Autorun.inf virus, you won’t be able to access the drive completely. You have to browse the drive by Exploring it i.e; Ctrl+E keys from the keyboard.

Sometimes ever you will not be able to see hidden files even if you have Show hidden files Enabled under Folder Options. well, this are all the wonders of this Autorun.inf virus.
I am going to show you this rare method of removing Autorun.inf manually using just winrar application, not any antivirus or malware programs.
Solution to Remove Autorun.inf Virus
Step 1: First Disable CD /DVD or USB Autorun in windows
Step 2: Open Winrar.exe  (Start–>All Programs–>WinRar–>WinRar.exe)
Step 3: Now Browse to any drive that is infected with Autorun.inf virus using winrar explorer.
Step4: Here you will see all the hidden files under winrar for that particular drive.
Step 5: Look for the file Autorun.inf and open it using notepad.
Step 6: In that Autorun file, some .EXE file will be mentioned that will be executed along with the autorun file. This exe file is the main culprit.
Delete Autorun.exe virus file
Step 7: Note the exe file mentioned in the Autorun.inf file. Close this Autorun.inf file.
Step 8: Now look for that .Exe file in the drive (Ex: c:/), Delete that .exe file along with Autorun.inf
Step 9: Restart your Operating System. Now your system is free with Autorun.inf Virus.
Note: Repeat the same process if your Usb or Pendrives are infected with Autorun.inf virus.
If you know anyother method to remove autorun virus from windows operating system, them kindly let me know by posting your method using the Comments on this post.

Get Windows 7 like task bar in Ubuntu with DocbarX

Posted by Rahil Thursday, August 19, 2010 0 comments

I personally liked the task bar of Windows 7 and wanted it in my Ubuntu as well. Not only because of it’s looks but also because of it’s features. DocbarX is exactly the same thing I was looking for. You can launch, close, mange all your windows from one place using the DocbarX. It also allows you to preview your Windows before bringing them to the front. So if you have opened multiple windows of same application, you don’t get confused between them.

Screenshot:

Installation:

1. Install python-wnck, python-gnomeapplet and python-numpy (DockbarX might be able to run without python-numpy, but it shouldn’t hurt).
$ sudo apt-get install python-gnomeapplet python-wnck python-numpy

1b. For previews libgtk2.0-0, libgx11-6 and libxcomposite1 needs to be installed (if they aren’t already). For recent and most used files you need zeitgeist. None of these are needed for DockbarX to run and can safely be ignored if you are not interested in theses features.
$ sudo apt-get install libgtk2.0-0 libx11-6 libxcomposite1 zeitgeist

2. Change directory to where you unpacked dockbarx and run the setup.py install
$ sudo ./setup.py install

3. Add DockBarX applet to panel (kill gnome-panel first if necessary)
You can also run dockbarx in window (meant for debugging purposes, mostly):
$dockbarx_factory.py run-in-window

A simple registry TRICK TO BLOCK USB drives (do it with care)

1. Go to Start –> Run, type Regedit.
2. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlset\Servic es\USBStor
3. In the right pane, look for value Start and have value as 0000000(3)
4. Double click on that and change that value to 4.

You might be required to restart the PC, and then you are done with it, USB is now blocked.

In case if you want to get the USB unblocked, just change the value again to 3

Boot up with DOS and delete the sam.exe and sam.log files from Windows\system32\config in your hard drive. Now when you boot up in NT the password on your built-in administrator account which will be blank (i.e No password). This solution works only if your hard drive is FAT kind.

Method 2

Step
1. Put your hard disk of your computer in any other pc .Step 2. Boot that computer and use your hard disk as a secondary hard disk (D'nt boot as primary hard disk ).Step 3. Then open that drive in which the victim’s window(or your window) is installed.Step 4. Go to location windows->system32->configStep 5. And delete SAM.exe and SAM.log
Step 6. Now remove hard disk and put in your computer.
Step
7. And boot your computer :-)

Convert FAT- NTFS

Posted by Rahil 0 comments

To convert a FAT partition to NTFS, perform the following steps.

Click Start, click Programs, and then click Command Prompt. In Windows XP, click Start, click Run, type cmd and then click OK.

At the command prompt, type CONVERT [driveletter]: /FS:NTFS. Convert.exe will attempt to convert the partition to NTFS.

NOTE:=
Although the chance of corruption or data loss during the conversion from FAT to NTFS is minimal, it is best to perform a full backup of the data on the drive that it is to be converted prior to executing the convert command.

Open Run and then type "gpedit.msc".
Now goto User Configuration > Administrative templates > Windows Component > Windows Explorer.
Click on Windows Explorer you will find the 3rd option on the right side of screen "Removes the Folder Option menu item from the Tools menu"
Just check it, if it is not configured then change it to enable by double clicking on it and after applying again set it to not configured.

I hopes that you will find the option after restarting windows.

•Open My Computer
•Double-click the drive where Windows is installed (usually drive (C:), unless you have more than one drive on your computer).
•If the contents of the drive are hidden, under System Tasks, click Show the contents of this drive.
•Double-click the Documents and Settings folder.
•Double-click your user folder.
•Right-click any folder in your user profile, and then click Properties.
•On the Sharing tab, select the Make this folder private so that only I have access to it check box.

Note

•To open My Computer, click Start, and then click My Computer.
•This option is only available for folders included in your user profile. Folders in your user profile include My Documents and its subfolders, Desktop, Start Menu, Cookies, and Favorites. If you do not make these folders private, they are available to everyone who uses your computer.
•When you make a folder private, all of its subfolders are private as well. For example, when you make My Documents private, you also make My Music and My Pictures private. When you share a folder, you also share all of its subfolders unless you make them private.
•You cannot make your folders private if your drive is not formatted as NTFS For information about converting your drive to NTFS
